ARTIST SUPPORT
We are a resource for artists in Indianapolis. Through our Open Stage and Makers Lab programs, we support artists and fellow arts organizations by providing them with the space and time to learn, grow, get inspired, experiment and create new work.
Current Programs

Indy Movement Arts is so thrilled to announce Open Stage, a new opportunity for local dance makers made possible by the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation. Through Open Stage, we will produce new and experimental work by local dance makers in our home at the Basile Opera Center. Through this program, selected artists will not have to pay a dime in venue rental fees, will receive a $250 stipend, and keep 100% of ticket proceeds. Artist lineup for 2025 performances will be announced soon!

The Makers Lab serves as an incubator of ideas where performing artists and arts organizations are provided with the space, and time needed to learn, grow, get inspired, experiment, and create new works. Current Makers Lab artists include: ChoreoBLITZ, Circle City Fire, Indy Dance Hub, Indy Flow Jam, Kaela Meyer, and Paragon. Makers Lab artists are local movement-based creators that use Indy Movement Arts as their home base. This is a special group of people because they keep the Indy dance scene pulsing, changing, thriving.

Past Programs

OPEN Indy (Original. Performance. Experiments. Now.) was an advanced arts education program that invited nationally and internationally recognized visiting artists to Indianapolis to provide accessible, professional, and innovative training opportunities for performing artists and the community at large. Produced jointly by IMAC and NoExit Performance, OPEN Indy had two main components: First as a platform for continued education and training for artists and community members in Indianapolis, and second, as an opportunity for Indy audiences to witness cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary performance. Through this program we presented Gerry Trentham (2018), Molly Brennan (2019), and Vangeline (2021).

As the arts field and the nation were facing the pandemic, Indy Movement Arts began experimenting with small, paid digital fellowships as our contribution towards keeping the arts economy viable. We retained the program through December of 2024. The Process/Progress residency became the latest iteration of our experiment. Process/Progress paid artists to reflect on their creative process and how they incorporate movement into their practice. Participating artists included: Kelvin Burzon, Jenny Delfuego, Natasha Thomas, Mina Keohane, Mary Jo DeMyer, Deanna Glenn, Elisabeth Roskopf, and Charles Borowicz. This program was made possible with support from Barnes & Thornburg, LLC.

IMAC's Micro Fellowship, created in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, was a month-long digital journey that highlighted local artists that live their creativity every day. Our goal was to reward artists who are curious, collaborative, and committed. IMAC Micro Fellows received a $200 stipend to create 2 videos per week for the IMAC audience exploring their thoughts on and expressions of artistry, craftsmanship, and what moves them to be makers. Participating artists included: Luis Antonio, Keegan Loye, Devin Hill, Sawyer Harvey, Jelani Davis, Sara Diggs, Andre Williams, MagnaCarter, Justin Sears-Watson, and Nicole Kelter.
