with Vangeline

Vangeline draws on 18 years of experience as a Butoh teacher and dancer, and has 35 years of expertise in the field of dance. She is the author of the critically acclaimed book of non-fiction Butoh: Cradling Empty Space. Vangeline is a 2018 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellow in Choreography, the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance's Beth Silverman-Yam Social Action Award, and the founder of the 15-year running, award-winning program "Dream a Dream Project", which brings Butoh dance to incarcerated men and women at correctional facilities across New York City.
She is a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine. She teaches trauma-informed Butoh classes. All OPEN Indy workshops are open level and beginners are welcome.
PLEASE NOTE: ALL attendees will need to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 (two doses - 2nd dose administered at least 3 weeks prior to the event) and/or a negative COVID-19 PCR test (within 72 hours of the event) for entry into all of the in person workshops. Masks must be worn at all times during the workshops.
Butoh and the Mind-Body Connection

This workshop will examine the role of attention, bodily awareness and mindfulness in butoh.

Butoh and Noguchi Taiso - Relaxing into Butoh
Sunday, November 7th
Online
4:00-6:00pm
This workshop will introduce the practice of Noguchi Taiso in Butoh, a form of Japanese release technique that is widely used in Butoh. Students will move from practical exercises to improvisation.

Butoh: Navigating Consciousness
Saturday, November 6th

This workshop will examine the role of consciousness in butoh and will lead students through practical exercises to differentiate between voluntary and involuntary movements, and how to use the difference creatively in butoh.

Vision/ Visualization in Butoh
Tuesday, November 9th

This workshop will examine the special role played by vision and visualization in butoh practice and will lead students toward an exploration of improvised Butoh.

You must register for each workshop individually. You will not be charged when registering. After your registration is received, you will be emailed a payment invoice. Workshop pricing is listed below and all prices include a $2 online processing fee. If you would like to pay by cash or check, please email info@indymovementarts.org to make arrangements. Reminder that each workshop will be a unique experience. All workshops will be held in person with the exception of Butoh & Naguchi Taiso. This workshop will be held online via Zoom.
